Savina Monastery

Savina Monastery is one of the most beautiful monastic complexes on the Montenegrin coast. It is located in the eastern part of Herceg Novi, in a green area above the Bay of Kotor, surrounded by cypress and pine trees. The complex developed between the 15th and 18th centuries and consists of several churches.

How to Get There

The monastery can be reached on foot from the center of Herceg Novi (approximately a 20–30 minute walk) or by car, with parking available nearby.

Opening Hours

The monastery is active and open to visitors daily, generally from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00–7:00 p.m., depending on the season. Admission is free. Modest dress is required, with shoulders and knees covered. Photography inside the churches is usually restricted.

What to See

The complex includes three churches: the small Church of the Dormition of the Virgin (the oldest part), the large 18th-century Church of the Dormition, and the Church of Saint Sava. The monastery is known for its rich collection of icons and church relics. Among the most venerated items is the Savina Icon of the Virgin Mary.

Savina is also appreciated for its peaceful atmosphere and beautiful views over the bay. The monastery courtyard and surrounding park create a sense of calm despite the proximity to the town.

Main Events

The main celebration is the Feast of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary (August 28), when solemn religious services are held. Regular services take place throughout the year, especially during major Orthodox holidays.
