Cetinje Monastery

Cetinje Monastery is the main spiritual center of Montenegro and one of the most important shrines of the Serbian Orthodox Church. It is located in the country’s historic capital, the town of Cetinje, at the foot of Mount Lovćen. The monastery was originally founded in the 15th century, while the present building dates back to the early 18th century.

How to Get There

The monastery is located in the center of Cetinje and is easily accessible on foot if you are already in town. Cetinje can be reached by car from Budva (approximately 40–50 minutes along a scenic mountain road) or from Podgorica (about 45 minutes). Parking is available near the historic center, from where it is just a short walk to the monastery.

Opening Hours

The monastery is active and open daily from morning until evening (approximately 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., depending on the season and church services). Admission is free. Visitors are advised to dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. Photography and video recording of the relics inside are not permitted.

What to See

Cetinje Monastery is renowned for its sacred relics. Among them are:

  • The Right Hand of John the Baptist, a highly venerated Christian relic,

  • A fragment of the True Cross,

  • The relics of Saint Peter of Cetinje, the ruler and spiritual leader of Montenegro in the 18th–19th centuries.

In addition to the relics, visitors can see the monastery courtyard, ancient manuscripts, and church artifacts.

Main Events

The monastery is especially crowded during major Orthodox holidays and important national church dates. The feast day of Saint Peter of Cetinje (celebrated in October) is particularly significant, with solemn liturgies and religious ceremonies held in his honor.
