Ostrog Monastery

Ostrog Monastery is the most famous Orthodox shrine in Montenegro and one of the main pilgrimage sites in the Balkans. It is located in the mountains, approximately 40–50 km from Podgorica, at an altitude of about 900 meters above sea level. The monastery is carved into a sheer cliff, and its white walls are visible from afar.

How to Get There

The monastery can be reached by car from Podgorica (about 1–1.5 hours) or from Budva (around 2 hours). The road follows a mountain serpentine route but is fully paved. Organized tours and pilgrimage trips are also available. From the Lower Monastery, visitors can either walk uphill to the Upper Monastery (approximately 20–30 minutes) or drive up by car.

Opening Hours

The monastery is active and open to visitors daily, generally from around 5:00–6:00 a.m. until 6:00–7:00 p.m., depending on the season. Entrance is free of charge. Women are advised to wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees when visiting the church.

What to See

The main relic of the monastery is the relics of Saint Basil of Ostrog, which are kept in the Upper Monastery. Inside, visitors can see 17th-century frescoes, small cave churches, and monastic cells. The atmosphere is quiet and contemplative, and the terrace in front of the monastery offers panoramic views over the Zeta valley.

Main Events

The most important event of the year is the Feast of Saint Basil of Ostrog, celebrated on May 12. On this day, thousands of pilgrims climb to the monastery, and night services and liturgies are held. Throughout the year, regular religious services take place, especially during major Orthodox holidays.
